Wednesday Morning Running Club

About Wednesday Morning Running Club:

Our goal is to promote and encourage trail running for all abilities from the beginner to the ultra marathon runner. We started in February 2002 through the efforts of Mark Cosmas, Kirk McCarville, Kevin Higgins and Art Bourque. Membership is free and we currently have 138 registered runners on our Facebook page (our "official" club roster).

Located in:

Phoenix, AZ

Where We Meet:

The Wednesday Morning Running Club meets at the top of Squaw Peak Drive parking lot just past the base of Piestewa Peak every Wednesday morning 5:15 AM for an hour long trail run within the Phoenix Mountain Preserve.

Our Trails:

Trails in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve have varied terrain but mostly steep, short climbs of rocky trail scattered with Saguaro cactus and views of Downtown Phoenix and Scottsdale. Other trails in the Phoenix area range from steep mountain trails in South Mountain, the McDowell Mountains and the White Tanks Mountains. All area trails are considered rocky with the exception of the trails in the McDowell Mountain Park area (home to the Javelina Jundred ultra marathon) where the elevation is minimal and the trails are mostly smooth, crush granite.

Trail Races and Ultra Marathons We Organize:

While WMRC doesn't organize races directly it does hold several race directors within it's group. The race directors for Zane Grey 50 Mile Endurance Run, Javelina Jundred, The Aravaipa DRT Series Trail Races and the all new Mogollon Monster 100 (soon to be one of the premier wilderness 100 mile races in the country) all calling Wednesday Mornings their homes from time to time.

Our Members:

We don't claim any "elite" runners, as in nationally or world ranked, but most of our members have completed multiple ultra races with several top 10 finishes in the major US competitions. Jamil & Nick Coury, Andrew Heard, Jay Danek, James Bonnett, Paulette Zillmer, and Matthew Schmitt among many others regularly finish competitively in local 50K's up to the Hardrock's of the world. As a group we have over 15 Hardrock finishes, a favorite and annual goal for many of our members, those lucky enough to gain entry.

Other Club Activities:

WMRC members come together every year to clear the course for the Zane Grey 50 each April as well as volunteer at Arizona races like the Old Pueblo 50, Across the Years, Man Against Horse 50, and the Aravaipa DRT Series races organized throughout the winter.
