Grit, endurance, temporary loss of sanity. You might need all of these if you want to attempt Grindstone. If you want to finish, well, just keep in mind this is, without a doubt, the hardest 100 miler east of the 100th meridian.

How did your race conception come about?
Grindstone came about from a desire to see a tough 100-miler during the fall running season. The big (and long) climbs and descents that are somewhat unique to the area is a major reason why the location was chosen. I also wanted to make a serious contribution to the sport of ultrarunning by offering a first-class event and give back to the community of runners that has given so much to me.
What makes runners sign up for your race?
Runners come to Grindstone with the expectation of a first-class experience. eco-x events strive to be on the cutting edge of endurance event promotion while preserving the integrity of what makes the community of ultrarunners so unique. Grindstone is event #4 in the annual Beast Series and, as such, is also a key event for those who are attempting to finish this grueling series of ultra races.
What's unique about your race that sets you apart?
The topography of the Grindstone race course is unique, in that it offers some really big climbs and descents for the east coast. The surface of the course is comprised of a really nice variety from old forest service roads to super technical single track as well as smooth & gorgeous ridge running. The 6pm start time is also very unique and forces all runners to begin by going through an entire night of running (something that many elites don't have to do with conventional morning starts).
Each year runners tell us that our volunteers are the best! We have a amazing crew of volunteers who set up incredible aid stations that certainly includes the standard fare as well as offering something unique at each station. We also offer a live webcast that has pioneered many approaches that other races across the country are now doing.
What does your schwag bag and finisher awards look like?
Patagonia has been a long time supporter of all our events and hence, our runners get the best prizes and awards, hands down. Each finisher (after crossing the finish line & hugging the totem pole) earns the Grindstone belt buckle and a unique Patagonia finisher's shirt. The overview male & female winner's receive the custom-made Grindstone trophy and category winners get Patagonia awards as well! In addition, we get a lot of support from outdoor industry companies that provide great prizes...almost everyone walks away with something fun!
