Salomon XR Crossmax, part of our continued series of Salomon XR series hybrid trail shoes.
While a mountain wilderness is an ideal playground for a trail runner to indulge in, most of us do not have the luxury of living near one. We end up running most of our miles on the smooth trails of regional parks, and for many, some miles on the road to and from the trailhead. Salomon XR shoes are designed precisely for such a runner. Both have a responsive fit and feel, the traction and protection of a trail shoe, and the cushy high mileage midsole of a road shoe that make them an ideal choice for an everyday training shoe. Think of them as hybrid trail shoes with pure mountain pedigrees.
FIT: One look at the Crossmax and you will notice that unlike most shoes, there is no stitching on the upper. That is because the Crossmax has a fully welded (heat bonded) upper. What does that mean for you? No seams! This reduces cause for blisters and makes for a comfortable fit. As with the Mission, the Crossmax forefoot is constructed with Sensiflex. The fabric wraps all the way around the upper, which makes it capable of stretching a considerable amount and is the perfect remedy for swelling, blisters, or bunions.
FEEL: The Crossmax sports a thick triple density midsole that provides plenty of cushion and withstands wear and tear very well. It can handle very high mileage weeks and will have no problem making it through an ultra-marathon. The midsole is very flexible at the metatarsals giving it a responsive ride that is great on road and trail. A robust toe cap and rock plate provides good protection and will prevent bruising or blistering from the occasional rock kicking. The upper is constructed out of a stretch air mesh that is designed for excellent breathability and quick drying.
- Protective TPU toe Cap (more robust than then mission)
- Sensifit (mountain outline that wraps the foot in the upper)
- Sensiflex (honeycomb material on the front of the shoe)
- OS Tendon
- Rock Plate
- Lace Pocket (located on tongue)
- Heel Drop: 12mm
BEST USES: Perfect for smooth, groomed, slightly rough, and road surfaces.
MSRP PRICE: $130
In summary, the Crossmax is a great every day trainer for the trail runner who is running on tame terrain and the roads. Compared to the XR Mission, the Mission is the lighter and more responsive option, while the Crossmax is more protective and stable.
